Day 15 - Tuesday - Sioux Falls, South Dakota (Fairgrounds). Got up early because of wind. Made it to Murdo just before lunchtime. Had our classic lunch at Murdo drive in. Crossed state. Stayed at Sioux Falls Fairgrounds.
After a miserably windy night, we decided to hightail it out of the Badlands. We were still trying to make up time after our Wells Fiasco so we headed off bright and early. (If not bright-eyed and bushy-tailed).
It was still windy so driving was exhausting. Greg was happy to stop in Murdo, SD (one of our favorite spots with a great little small town drive in). We sat in the parking lot and he did some work before lunchtime. Then we walked over and had a great lunch. Liza had another one of their famous rhubarb shakes. OMG, is it good!
We drove across the state and saw some amazing country. Driving on Highway 90 is a treat. There aren't a lot of cars and very few big trucks. It was green and lush and beautiful all across the state. It was also blustery and threatening to rain (or actually raining) most of the day.
We stopped at the Corn Palace. Unfortunately, it's under construction -- evidently it will be even better, soon. Honestly, we were thoroughly underwhelmed. I'm sure it was quite something in it's day but between the construction and the age of it, it is basically a big huge, tacky gift store (which normally we love -- Hello, Wall Drug!) with huge murals made of corn that are kind of old and tired looking. Gage could NOT believe that we'd stopped to see this place!
We drove on and ended our trip at Sioux Falls. We stayed at the Fairgrounds there which turned out to be perfect for us. We'd heard that it could be noisy and yes, there were a lot of trains and some big trucks but it didn't bother us at all. We had a nice private site and a good dinner out at Famous Dave's. What more can you ask for?
