Planning!

We are planning our Summer trip.  With about 3 and 1/2 weeks to go before we leave, it's exciting to get it all planned out.  Unlike many previous trips, this trip is going to be mapped out more carefully as we are going on a great college tour of the Northwest.

2015 Summer Trip, Pt 1 (Boulder Creek to Bellingham)

2015 Summer Trip, Pt 2 (Bellingham to Boulder Creek)

Google Maps, in its infinite wisdom has limited you to 10 locations on a trip now.  So I split our trip into two parts.  For the first part, we are cruising up Oregon and will be visiting colleges along the way.  We'll also be visiting some of Liza's family in Oregon, having fun in Bend, cruising down a part of Hwy 395 we've never done before, and hanging with Liza's folks in June Lake, CA while Gage is at running camp in Mammoth.

Next post will be about the upgrades, updates, and changes to our FMC and traveling routine.

Getting ready to roll . . .

We've been working hard to get ready for this trip.  Here is a list of some of the things we improved on our fabulous motorhome . . .

  • repaired AC that works while we are driving (the one that works when we're parked has always worked well)
  • rebuilt front spring and changed front shocks (to get rid of a nasty squeak that we've put up with for years!)
  • relocated rear batteries (that power the electricity for the "house" not the engine)
  • added a pantry
  • recovered dashboard in gorgeous black "leather"
  • added foam mattresses under our thermal-foam mattresses (comfy!)
  • added decorative (and privacy-enhancing) window film in bathroom window
  • TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System)
  • changed various gaskets/seals/oil/fluids etc.
  • added built-in coffeemaker
  • fixed tail lights and running lights
  • added WIFI and 3G boosting systems
  • added a circuit board to the fridge so we can adjust the temperature in hot climates
  • added an automatic fire suppression system in the engine compartment (like NASCAR uses)
  • added additional power outlets in dashboard glovebox
Wow.  Listed like that, we've been busy!  Whew.  We need a vacation from getting ready for our vacation!

UPDATE: Here are some pictures!

It's summer so we must be hitting the road . . .

We are getting ready to head off on our next epic adventure.  School is out.  Greg is making sure his clients are ready for him to be on the road.  We've done tons of work to #708.  All that's left is one last cleanup and packing in clothes and food.

This year, we are taking a longer route.  We are reprising our last two trips (in part) and then we're adding on some new favorites.  This map was one of the options we discussed and it's close to what we are going to do.  Of course, we don't know for sure what we're going to do this year.

We are going to head south again and go to Zion National Park.  Then we'll wind our way northeast and end up in Colorado Springs for the 2012 FMC Owners Club Mega-Rally.  Then we head north and add one new state (North Dakota) to our list.  We are planning to cruise through the land of Liza's birth (Glasgow, Montana) and then we are going to Glacier National Park.  From there, we head southwest and end up on the Oregon Coast where we leisurely make our way home.

Yup.  It's a plan.

(PS.  You might have noticed that we've moved the site (all of it -- all old posts are here now).  There were some features we wanted to add that were tough to implement on Wordpress so we migrated to Blogger where those features were easy.)

Day 19 -- Durango, CO

The Millers on the Durango-Silverton train

The big excitement in Durango is taking a trip on the Durango-Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad.  You leave Durango in the morning and take a 3-1/2 hour train trip to Silverton. The elevation change between Durango and Silverton is nearly 3,000 feet -- Silverton is around 9,000 ft.  Silverton is, as you might guess from the name, a silver mining town.  Like Bodie, California, it was a boomtown but it didn’t die when the mining dried up -- Silverton is still a “going concern.”  The main industry now is tourism as the trains arrive and depart several times a day.

The ride up the mountain is spectacular.  The train travels up the Animas River sometimes right down at the water and sometimes at dizzying heights above it.  You travel through forests of pine, oak, and aspen.  You see wildflowers and birds.  If we were lucky, we could have seen wild animals too -- other than the few prairie dogs we saw.

We did see some Austin-Healey enthusiasts who pulled over and waved at us.

There is a concession car on the train and they let you get free refills if you buy a fancy cup with a lid -- we did.  When you are at high altitude, you need to stay hydrated!

Gage on the train

Ruth and Greg on the train

I was really proud of the Ruthie on the train.  She gets a little creeped out by heights -- but only when she is in a vehicle. On her own two feet, she’ll stand on the edge of the Grand Canyon without any hesitation -- but in a vehicle, she’s not at all happy about heights.  She did great though on the train and even took a window seat so she could see everything! Gage, on the other hand, had no problem with the heights -- he's way more concerned when he's on his own two feet.

When we arrived in Silverton, we got off the train and hightailed it to the restaurant we’d decided on for lunch -- it was GREAT.  We ate at Thee Pitts Again -- an amazing BBQ place.  It’s been featured on the Food Network and it did not disappoint.  It was crowded but we got a table right away -- our patented technique is for me to figure out what I want QUICKLY and then tell Greg while I go snag a table and he does the ordering.  We  were starved after the train trip and I was feeling the altitude so a good meal was a MUST!  The food was fantastic.  We all had different things, shared bites, and loved it.

Then we shopped.  Silverton is a tourist town and it’s full of little shops.  Some are wonderful with great arts and crafts, some are tacky knick-knack shops, and some are somewhere in between.  We didn’t buy much but we had a great time walking up and down the streets.

Train ready to head back to Durango

When you book your trip on the railroad, you have a choice about how to return. You can ride the railroad back (another 3-1/2 hours) or you can take a bus (about 1-1/2 hours).  We took the train back.  It was quieter and more mellow.  We had booked our seats through their Kids Ride Free promotion which meant we were in a car with all families.  Thankfully, a lot of them took the bus back so there were empty seats and a much quieter ride home.  We relaxed our way down the mountain.  There may have been some napping.

As we got closer to Durango, we, of course, started traveling through more inhabited areas.  The train is important to Durango so everyone waves at the train as it chugs through town.  Usually, that involves waving of HANDS.  However, there is another important activity in Durango . . . Rafting on the Animas river.  The rafters like to MOON the train as it chugs by the river -- waving their butts at us.  We passed two groups of rafters who mooned us as we passed.  A group on the shore of the river even got into the act and mooned us.  I was NOT ready and didn’t get any of the full moon shots on camera -- but I found one here on Flickr so you can appreciate the moment.  It was hilarious!

Before we headed back to camp, we had dinner at a mexican restaurant in Durango.  Showers were essential when we got back to camp to wash off the grime from the train -- coal powered steam engines are dirty!

Everyone's a critic . . .

So, Greg doesn't think much of my route map and offers this correction for your viewing pleasure.

I'm sure you can see all the great changes.  For example, I had us approaching Canyon de Chelly from the WRONG direction!  Horrors!  (Love you, honey!)

That said, it's all up in the air right now anyway.  Southeastern Arizona is on fire and the smoke plume is impacting air quality throughout New Mexico.  Not good.  We're considering our options today as we continue to pack and get ready for the trip.  We're going somewhere, to be sure.  The route is undecided at this point!

We'll keep you posted!  (Pun intended!)

Our Route . . . or is it?

We are expecting to travel along this route or something closely approximating it.  There are stops I've left off and the whole leg down to southeastern New Mexico may get lobbed off altogether. We are definitely winging it this year more than we did last.  We have only made reservations for the first few places we're expecting to spend the night.

We are due to leave on Monday.  Leaving behind coastal redwoods and lush greenery for the stark beauty of the high desert.  We can't wait!

It's Nearly Time!

FMC #708 and the Millers are getting ready to roll off on another EPIC trip.  We're heading to the desert Southwest this time.  We plan to explore the great states of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada before returning home to California!

For Greg and I, this is a reprise of our 3 week Honeymoon trip (sans Death Valley!) only this time, we get to share it with our amazing kids.  We've been doing lots of work on the FMC in preparation.  We can't wait to roll . . .

Really? This is vacation weather?

In anticipation of our vacation, I added the weather for Minden, NE to my iGoogle page.  I usually do this when we are going camping somewhere.  It builds my anticipation for the visit.

However . . .

It's rained there almost everyday since I've been tracking the weather there.  We just ended the longest winter I can remember here.  It rained right through the end of May.  At least those temperatures are coming down some . . . 89F and raining.  Wow.

Still . . . there's that old saying about the worst day fishing is better than the best day working. It holds true for camping, too!

The big summer trip

Map for our Nebraska Trip, Summer 2010

This trip was conceived around the campfire at our last FMC rally.  Having a destination . . . Minden, Nebraska and the big FMC rally was the impetus to get us moving to make it happen.  We've been trying to do a long summer trip for 3 years now and finally . . . we're doing it.  Planning, working, purchasing, repairing, promising, and finally blogging.

Watch this space for more info . . . T minus 5 days and counting.

Summer Trips!

There is something so fun about planning our trips!  Last summer, we took a week and went to Sequoia National Park.  We enjoyed it so much that we are going back again this June.

sequoia2009We're planning a drive down into King's Canyon and a horseback riding trip as well.  We're going to be using the National Forest Service's dispersed camping on Forest Route 14S11.  No hookups, of course, but absolutely beautiful with absolutely no reservations.  Should be interesting.

In July, we're doing a trip into northern California and southern Oregon.

oregon2009We're spending a night at Camping World in Vacaville (always nice to get an early start on the shopping for the trip!).  Then we'll head up to Lake Shasta and stay at in the Antlers National Forest.  We'll head up to Ashland then and camp in a friend's driveway while we explore the Ashland area . . . Crater Lake, Coos Bay, etc.  It's going to be so fun. On the way home, we'll head down to the mouth of the Klamath River.  We have reservations at the Klamath River RV Park.  Next, we'll head down to Mendocino and stay at MacKerricher State Park.  Lastly, we head for Clear Lake.  We are meeting up with a group of friend's at Greg's aunt's summer cabin.  1050 miles of fun, fun, fun!

Planning for Spring Break

With the good news that Liza still has a job as a teacher in California next year, we decided to revisit our Spring Break 2007 plans. We're returning to Disneyland this Spring Break. Here is our route:

We'll be leaving on the 6th and come back home late on Easter Sunday.  Can not WAIT to get away.  Even though this will be a looooooooong week of planning and prepping!

Summer Trip -- Sequoia/Madera

Route for our upcoming Camping Trip

We leave Sunday for a trip to Sequoia and then a small lake near Madera, CA.  We are picking up Ruth on the way -- she's been with my parents in the Eastern Sierra.  The Sequoia leg is just us and we're meeting a group of friends in Madera.  Should be a fun but HOT trip.  Expected temps in the low 90's.  Gotta pack the fans!

Next Trip -- North to Albion River

708 is heading north this weekend to Albion River Campground along the Mendocino Coast.  It's a family trip and we have divers in our family.  They'll be brining back abalone for us all to enjoy!  Hurrah!  More later!

#708 is heading for Morro Bay!

It's going to be a fun weekend trip.  Greg and the kids will head down on Friday around noon (Bad teacher-mom, pulling the kids out of school!) with his mom, sister, and one nephew.  I'll head down after school -- possibly with my other nephew along for the ride.  We're meeting good friends -- well, family, really, in all the ways that count. It should be a relaxing, joyful weekend!  We'll head home on Sunday!

Planning for 2008

calendar_clip_art.jpg

We're planning out our camping year.  We'll get there. We have a couple on our list already -- a trip to Mendocino, a trip down to San Simeon. We know we're heading for San Diego for Spring Break. We also know we want to take a long trip this summer -- maybe up north . . . maybe the southwest. Lots of plans. Lots of work to do before we can hit the road.

My goal this year is to do a better job blogging about our trips and the changes we've made to the FMC.  Feel free to nag!  :)

We're going to Disneyland!

Here is our trip map:

dland2.jpg

This is our children's first trip to Disneyland. At ages 8.5 and 7, they are just about the perfect ages to have a memorably wonderful trip. We are all very excited! We are also going to see some of our LA area family and friends. Ron and Louise are going to come have dinner with us on Wednesday night. We are going to have such a fun trip! More later!
